|Commonly Asked Tooth Whitening Questions
What causes teeth to become discolored?
There are many factors in our daily lives that can cause staining or discoloration of our teeth. Some of the most common are aging, drinking coffee, tea or colas, and smoking. Other causes can be certain medications like tetracycline and even our genetics. Every person has different enamel and some have brighter and whiter enamel than others.
What are the tooth whitening procedures available?
There are two basic groups of tooth whitening options-- in-office and at-home.
In-office techniques, we offer Sinsational Smile, an in-office technique using a light, which is very easy and takes only 20 minutes. You will not have to wear trays with liquid at home to touch up, the procedure is much easier and less costly. Currently we charge on $ 99.00.
At-home kits are the other alternative Your trays may be worn at night or for just a few hours during the day. The choice is yours. At-home whitening is more gradual than in-office treatment and may take up to two or three weeks before you see the full effect.
Is professional tooth whitening better than over-the-counter products?
Yes. Professional tooth whitening, whether done in the office or at home, produces a brighter and whiter smile. That's because the whitening gel is stronger and the trays in an at-home kit are custom-made to fit your teeth closely. Our teeth whiten while they're in contact with the whitening agent. If the trays fit too loosely, the gel won't be touching your teeth evenly, which could give you a patchy result.
How white can my teeth become?
Nobody can say with certainty. After many years of daily living, with staining agents in unknown amounts affecting your tooth color, any cosmetic dentist can only say that your teeth will probably whiten A LOT!
If you use an at-home kit, we'll give you a standard starting amount of tooth whitening gel. If you think your teeth will whiten even more than this amount accomplishes, you can have more, until the color changing stops.
How long will the bright white last?
That partly depends on your lifestyle. If you drink a lot of coffee or tea, have red wine with dinner each night, and smoke, you'll need another whitening treatment sooner than someone who does none of those things. But potentially, with proper care, such as regular brushing and flossing and check ups with your dentist, your new smile can last for years.
How much does tooth whitening cost?
Unfortunately, dental insurance does not cover the cost of tooth whitening procedures or any other cosmetic dental procedures. At Dr. Matin's office, we'll work with you to make things affordable.
